In 1954, a 70,000-square-foot (6,500 m2) passenger terminal opened and the airport was renamed Douglas Municipal Airport in honor of former Charlotte Mayor Ben Elbert Douglas Sr., who had overseen the airport's opening 20 years earlier. The terminal had two floors; passenger operations were confined to the ground floor. Ticketing and baggage claim were on each side of an open space that bisected the building north to south, and a mezzanine restaurant and airline offices overlooked this open space. The OAG for April 1957 shows 57 weekday departures on Eastern, 7 Piedmont, 6 Capital, 4 Delta and 2 Southern. Nonstop flights did not reach beyond Newark, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Louisville, Birmingham, and Jacksonville.

This project shields passengers from the elements, decongests hold rooms and heightens security and safety with boarding bridge-equipped gates. This expansion also will enable larger regional aircraft to use the concourse due to the rising elevation on the north end and up-gauging of regional aircraft. Passengers arriving at Charlotte Airport can find a lot of useful information on our website about arrival services.

Identified in the Airport’s 2016 Master Plan Update, the Fourth Parallel Runway program was identified to address runway capacity to meet future demand at acceptable levels of runway delay. The construction of the South End-Around Taxiway will require a relocation of one mile of West Boulevard. With the expansion and reconfiguration of the airfield, an additional Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting facility is needed to support airfield emergency response times. And with Destination CLT, the airport’s ongoing $3.1 billion multiphase capital investment program, visitors are likely to find something new during every visit. The airport offers a TSA PreCheck program for eligible passengers, which allows them to use expedited screening lanes and avoid removing their shoes, belts, and jackets, as well as their laptops and liquids from their carry-on bags. This is in accordance with the North Carolina Smoke-Free Law, which bans smoking in most of the public places and workplaces.
Charlotte Douglas is a fully connected airport with all concourses accessible from the main terminal, as well as each other. The only way to get between concourses is to walk — there are no trains or electronic people movers. However, there are several luggage storage options available near the airport. Some nearby hotels offer luggage storage for a fee, and there are also luggage storage facilities located in the city. If you need to store your luggage for an extended period of time, it is recommended that you research and book a storage option in advance.

There is only one terminal, so if you are making a connection, it will be easy to locate your gate. However, if your next gate is located at the far end of another concourse, you may have to do a lot of walking. There are currency exchanges post-security in the atrium and concourse D. Rentals cars are located on the other side of the pickup/drop off lanes, on level 2 of the hourly parking deck.
